Willowwind School uses the Math in Focus program, which is based on a Singapore Math approach. This is an advanced curriculum that academically engages students with topics, while allowing them to gain a deep understanding of math concepts. By teaching fewer topics in greater depth at each grade level and by using visual representations and modeling strategies, Math in Focus emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding, place value, and computational fluency. The program provides for differentiation within each grade level. It will help ensure that our students are engaged with mastery level experiences, improving computational and problem-solving skills, and are prepared for Algebra upon graduating from Willowwind.
Students are expected to work on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division math facts four nights a week. Instant recall of these facts builds computational fluency and allows students to focus on the main question in word problems. In addition there will be a math worksheet to do several times a week.
Students can even log into Math in Focus at home for additional practice and support. The child's first and last name (all one word) is their user name and their 6 digit birthdate (mmddyy) acts as the password.
